China is now able to install electromagnetic catapult on its aircraft carrier, but if the carrier is conventionally powered, it has to use integrated full electric propulsion like UK’s aircraft carrier Queen Elizabeth.
With that technology, the daily supply of electricity, electric propulsion and high energy weapons all use the electricity from one major generator. It will not only greatly reduce noise, but also enable the deployment of new weapons such as electromagnetic canon and laser canon.
China has mastered the technology of integrated full electric propulsion and will use it in its new Type 054B frigate. However, as an aircraft carrier needs propulsion of 60000 to 70,000 hp while the maximum steam or gas turbine China can produce has only 36,000 hp, there is still a long way to go for China to make an aircraft carrier with integrated full electric propulsion.
